It's a $33.5 billion export business, growing every year, and the government has publicly committed to nearly triple that to $100 billion by 2030 as part of a broader $350 billion textile market target. Apparel alone — actual finished clothing, not raw yarn or fabric — makes up 42% of that export basket. Raw and semi-finished materials account for another 34%, and finished non-apparel goods (home textiles, technical fabric, industrial use) round out the remaining 30%.
Partly because textiles doesn't have the cultural cachet of tech or pharma — nobody's writing hype pieces about a garment factory the way they write about a unicorn startup. But the underlying numbers are real: the sector contributes 2.3% to India's GDP, 13% to industrial production, and 12% to total exports, while directly employing over 45 million people — more than almost any other industry except agriculture. And nearly 80% of that capacity sits inside MSMEs, small and medium manufacturers, not giant conglomerates. That's not a footnote. That's most of the industry.

Where the growth is actually coming from
Export growth in FY 2025-26 wasn't concentrated in one or two markets — it spread across more than 120 destinations. But some numbers stand out. Exports to the UAE grew 22.3%. Japan grew 20.6%. Egypt jumped 38.3%. Nigeria grew 21.4%. Senegal grew 54.4%. And Sudan, starting from a small base, grew 205.6%. The US and EU together still account for roughly half of India's textile exports, but the fastest growth is happening in markets most people wouldn't think to look at — a sign that India's textile diplomacy through free trade agreements is starting to actually move numbers, not just headlines.
60,000 people, 130 countries, one building in Delhi
If you want to see this industry in physical form, you didn't have to look far this year. Bharat Tex 2026 — India's largest textile trade event — took over Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, pulling in more than 60,000 participants from over 130 countries. The numbers inside that figure are almost hard to process: 1,647 exhibitors, nearly 95,000 business visitors, over 11,300 buyers including more than 6,000 from outside India, spread across more than 16 lakh square feet of exhibition space. That's larger than most airport terminals.
The event runs on what the government calls its "5F Vision" — Farm to Fibre to Factory to Fashion to Foreign — a deliberate attempt to frame the entire textile chain, from a cotton field to an export shipment, as one connected story. Whether or not you buy the branding, the underlying point is real: India is trying to stop exporting raw cotton and start exporting finished, higher-value garments instead. This is the story most fashion content never gets to, because it's not about color palettes or seasonal trends — it's about materials science. IIT Delhi's Department of Textile & Fibre Engineering runs the SMITA Centre of Excellence for Smart Textiles, a research lab that's been quietly working since 2007 and was formally elevated to a national Centre of Excellence in 2021. Its past work includes nanofiber-based nasal filters, antimicrobial fabric finishes, textile-based sensors, and genuine electronic textiles — fabric with circuitry woven directly into it.
More than you'd think. At Sanrachna 2026, a national hackathon for technical textiles run under the government's National Technical Textiles Mission, IIT Delhi swept the top three spots out of over 700 applicants and 31 finalists nationwide. One of the winning projects, developed by M.Tech graduate Sambhaskar Singh, is a protective garment for farmers — designed using aerogel-inspired insulation to manage heat stress, block UV radiation, resist rain and humidity, and repel insects, all built into a single breathable fabric. This isn't speculative lab talk; it was recognized directly by India's Union Minister of Textiles as one of the most promising technical textile innovations in the country this year.

The point is that the same country, the same city, the same textile ecosystem building your everyday shirt is simultaneously producing genuine materials science at a level most people assume only exists in Germany or Japan. That context changes how you should think about "Made in India" as a label — it's not a compromise, it's sitting inside a research pipeline serious enough to win national recognition.
The uncomfortable number: what India still imports
None of this means the industry has nothing left to fix. India still imports roughly $4.8 billion worth of specialized technical textiles every year — protective garments, advanced medical fabrics, high-performance materials for extreme conditions — because domestic manufacturing hasn't caught up to demand in those specific categories yet. Technical textile imports actually grew faster than exports for years, at an 8% compound annual rate, rising from $1,635 million to $2,209 million in just one measured period. Bharat Tex 2026 explicitly called this out as a priority to fix, showcasing domestic manufacturers like RSWM and Trident pushing into exactly these high-value segments to reduce that import dependency.
The cotton contradiction nobody talks about
Here's a genuinely strange fact hiding inside India's cotton industry: India cultivates about 40% of the entire world's cotton-growing area — by far the largest footprint of any country on earth. But per-hectare yield sits at roughly 450 kg, compared to a global average closer to 2,000 kg. India grows cotton on more land than anyone, and gets less than a quarter of the yield efficiency other cotton-growing nations achieve on the same amount of land.
The honest answer involves irrigation access, pest pressure, seed variety adoption, and fragmented small landholdings that make mechanization harder — the same structural issues that show up across a lot of Indian agriculture, not something unique to cotton. It's not a reason to distrust Indian cotton quality; premium, hand-picked, well-processed Indian cotton is genuinely excellent, which is exactly what goes into pure-cotton shirting. But it does mean the raw efficiency of the supply chain has real room to improve — and that improvement is precisely what government programs tied to the $100 billion export target are trying to fund.
Where a small manufacturer actually fits into a $33 billion industry
It's easy to read numbers like these and assume they only describe giant conglomerates and government ministries. They don't. Remember that 80% of the industry's capacity sits inside MSMEs — small and medium manufacturers, the same category a Gandhi Nagar shirt manufacturer sits in. The government's own messaging around this makes the connection explicit: labour-intensive garment manufacturing is described as one of the country's largest employment generators, with officials noting that roughly one crore rupees invested in the garment sector creates jobs for 50 to 60 people directly. That's not an abstraction — that's a factory floor, cutting tables, and a tailoring team, which is exactly what building a shirt actually requires, at any scale.
The national conversation happening at Bharat Tex, in IIT Delhi's labs, and inside Ministry of Textiles export data isn't disconnected from a shirt manufacturer working out of Gandhi Nagar. It's the same ecosystem, viewed from a different altitude. The materials science happening at IIT Delhi eventually filters down into what fabric mills can offer manufacturers like us.
